General Japanese Chin (Spaniel) Information:
Origin: China or Korea, their history is a bit of a mystery
Breed Purpose: Pampered Companion
Kennel Club Dog Group: Toy
Weight: 4-15 pounds there are two classes under 7 pounds and over 7 pounds (we breed pups around to be aprox. 10 pounds)
Height: 8-11 inches
Lifespan: About 10 years
Common Ailments: Japanese Chins suffer from the respiratory problems because of their shortened nose. They commonly get eye and ear infections. Make sure you keep their ears clean and air to the ears when possible. Moisture trapped in ears cause infections (as with any dog). They often have luxating petellas which is a common issue in small dogs. They also tend to have heart problems as they age, which is a common problem in the spaniel breeds. Be aware of extreme temperatures especially heat and humidity as they can not breathe well and have heat stroke because of their shortened noses and thick coat. They can also suffer from seasonal allergies.
Things To Consider: They are born with a shorter coat that grows longer as they age. Their coat will need to be brushed to keep it clean and tangle free. They are extremely loyal and devoted to one person the most in their family. (personally ours don't prefer one person they'll take attention from anyone). They are weary of strangers and new enviroments so socializing when young can help a lot for them to over come this. (We have personally found they are fun out going dogs who love to meet new people). They get along well with other pets, dogs, and kids. They are lively, charming, loving, affectionate, and intelligent prefering to be center of attention. They don't tend to be barkers and often mirror the mood of person they are with. They make great dogs for people with small spaces.
